Eligibility for a housing choice voucher is based on a household's annual gross income and the public housing agency’s (PHA) definition of a family.
Please note, the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) waitlist is currently closed. Please register on the HCV website to be notified when any Section 8 program in the state opens its waiting list.
To receive a voucher:
- You must be a U.S. citizen or a certain non-citizen who has an eligible immigration status
- The family's yearly income must be low enough to qualify. The family must have an income at or below 50% of the median income for the area where they want to live.
- Meet any additional eligibility requirements established by the PHA.
If the PHA determines that the family meets the eligibility requirements, the family is placed on a waiting list until funds are become available.
What happens during the application process?
During the application process, the PHA collects and verifies information on your family composition, income, and assets to determine whether you qualify.
- The PHA will verify the total number of people living in your home
- All sources of income
- Any household assets
- Immigration Status
- Criminal background check
- Prior participation in subsidized federal or state program
If you qualify, they also calculate your housing assistance amount. If the PHA determines that your family is eligible, they will place you on a waiting list. The PHA will contact you if you are chosen from the waiting list and issue a housing voucher.
