Can I move and still get my Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) assistance?

Read time: 6 minutes

Yes. You may be able to move and keep your Section 8 HCV if you:

  • Tell your public housing agency (PHA) before you move
  • End your current lease according to its terms
  • Find a new home that meets program requirements

You may also be able to move to another part of the United States. If you did not live in the PHA's service area when you applied, you must live there during your first 12 months of assistance before moving your voucher elsewhere. Before moving to an area served by a different PHA, contact the local housing office that serves the town you live in.

Find the local housing office that serves the town you live in.

Please note, the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) waitlist is currently closed.
Please register on the HCV website to be notified when any Section 8 program in the state opens its waiting list.
