Kids Court Academy (KCA) is an online program for middle and high school students in Connecticut. It helps students learn about rights and social justice. Students take part in guided talks and activities. KCA is supported by CHRO and is part of its education and outreach work.
Program Background
KCA began in 2020 as an outgrowth of CT Kids Court Competition, which was founded in 1993 by then UCONN Law students Cheryl Sharp and Rae Thiesfield-Vann. Tens of thousands of students have participated in Kids Court, and the hope is that thousands of additional students will benefit from this attorney pipeline program - KCA.
Program Focus
KCA is designed to develop interest in youth regarding civil and human rights law with a focus on social justice. Students learn through cases, movies, and group talks at virtual sessions how laws help stop discrimination and protect people’s rights. Lawyers and other experts lead the one-hour virtual sessions twice a month. The program raises the social consciousness of youth regarding civil and human rights law. The law is a powerful tool!

- Introduce students to law, community work, and how laws are made
The program also helps students explore future interests in law, advocacy, and public service.
How the Program Works
KCA is a series of online workshops. In each session, students:
- Learn about civil and human rights
- Take part in guided talks
- Work with students from different communities
- Learn how laws affect daily life
