Your home’s total monthly rent should stay within the limit allowed for your specific town. If you choose a unit that costs more than your local rent cap, your caseworker may not be able to approve your paperwork.

How much will I pay?
The Public Housing Agency (PHA) calculates the maximum amount of housing assistance you can receive. Your exactly monthly payment depends on your household type.
- General eligibility: You will pay 40% of your monthly income toward rent and utility costs.
- If you are elderly or have a disability: You will pay 30% of your monthly income toward rent and utility costs.

Utility Allowance schedule
If your rent does not include utilities (such as heat, electricity, or water), the State provides a standard Utility Allowance. This allowances lowers the monthly rent amount your pay directly to your landlord, giving you room in your budget to pay your utility bills. Standards rates are estimated based on your rental’s bedroom count.
