BFPE: Delay or expedite a hearing

Read time: 6 minutes

You can ask to delay your hearing or request a faster hearing in certain situations. Use the information below to understand what is required and how to contact the Board of Firearms Permit Examiners (BFPE).

Request a delay of a hearing
We require you to email BFPE@ct.gov to request a delay. You must include documentation of necessity, or proof that explains why you need to delay your hearing.

Examples of documentation include:

  • A doctor’s note
  • A travel itinerary

We review each request. Requests sent within 24 hours of the hearing may not be considered. The Board Secretary will decide if we can reschedule your hearing or if you must keep your current date.
Plan ahead and send your request as early as possible.

Request for an expedited hearing
If your permit was revoked and it directly affects or deprives you of your job where you are presently employed, please contact the Board immediately. Be ready to provide the Board with, "documentation of necessity” that shows proof of your present employment. The Board Secretary will decide if your case can be expedited or you need to continue with the current date.

Additional documents or exhibits
We require these documents:

  • Initial appeal letter: Your written appeal to the Board requesting a hearing on the denial or revocation of your permit
  • Appellant questionnaire: A required form completed by the appellant that provides information relevant to the appeal

You must also include hospital discharge instructions if you were admitted under a risk warrant.
Submit all required items to avoid delays.

You may choose to include extra documents to support your case, such as:

  • DD-214 (military honorable discharge)
  • Job evaluations
  • Thank-you letters from people or organizations you have helped

Letters must specifically address the appellant’s denial or revocation of a pistol permit. Letters addressed “To Whom It May Concern” will not be accepted. You must also notify the Board if your address or phone number changes.
