• State Issues Second Consumer Alert about IRS Telephone Scam

  The Department of Consumer Protection and Office of the Attorney General continue to receive complaints and inquiries from consumers worried about telephone calls in which the caller claims to be an official from the IRS and attempts to solicit tax payments.

• State Granted Court-appointed Receiver for Amistad America, Inc.

  – The Superior Court for the Judicial District of Hartford has approved an application filed by the Attorney General seeking appointment of a receiver over the operations and assets of Amistad America, Inc., Governor Dannel P. Malloy, Attorney General George Jepsen and state Department of Economic & Community Development (DECD) Commissioner Catherine Smith announced today.

• State Brings Criminal Charges and Civil Claims Action against Stamford-based Dental Provider Alleging Medicaid Fraud

  In a coordinated law enforcement effort, the state has commenced both criminal and civil proceedings against a Stamford-based dental practitioner and related individuals and businesses alleging a long-running and substantial scheme of fraudulent Medicaid claims for dental services provided to residents of long-term care facilities in the state, Attorney General George Jepsen, Chief State's Attorney Kevin T. Kane and Department of Social Services Commissioner Roderick L. Bremby announced today.

• Settlement Will Provide for Consumer Restitution in Deceptive Practices Suit over Weight-loss Product Marketing, Sales

  The state of Connecticut and the Federal Trade Commission have entered into a settlement with three Branford-based companies and their owner that will provide restitution to consumers harmed by the companies’ alleged deceptive and unfair Internet marketing and sales practices, Attorney General George Jepsen and state Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner William M. Rubenstein said today.

• Settlement Will Provide $4.5M to PURA for Electric Supplier Enforcement, Consumer Education

  The state Public Utilities Regulatory Authority will receive $4.5 million for consumer assistance and education and enforcement activity related to third-party electric suppliers under a settlement agreement with electric supplier Energy Plus Holdings, LLC, Attorney General George Jepsen and Consumer Counsel Elin Swanson Katz said today.

  A free, mortgage-assistance event for homeowners who need information or help with loan modifications, foreclosure prevention, state and federal assistance programs and other lending-related issues will be held Thursday, October 9, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Conference Center at CoCo Key, 3580 East Main Street, in Waterbury, Connecticut.   Parents continue to be the chief influence on young drivers' attitudes toward safety behind the wheel, said leading Connecticut safety advocates as the state marks National Teen Safe Driver Week, which runs through Saturday (Oct. 19-25). They are urging parents to talk to their teens this week about key ways to keep safe.

  In a brief filed today, Attorney General George Jepsen urged the state Public Utilities Regulatory Authority to reject an application by the Connecticut Light & Power Company seeking a $221 million increase in its rates and to approve rates that are no more than just and reasonable as required by state law.

  Attorney General George Jepsen Tuesday commended those cable, satellite television and telecommunications companies providing storm-related credits to Connecticut customers, which in many cases, exceed what the law and their service contracts required.
